CESARE CRUGNI: AN ARTIST OF SAVONA WITH INTERNATIONAL PRESTIGE
by Luciano Pasquale
The Foundation A. De Mari Cassa di Risparmio di Savona is happy and honored to present the works of the sculptor Cesare Crugni.
Born and raised in Savona, he developed his creative talent engraving day, first in wood, then in marble, until he became recognized as the father of Scultomaieutia.
Know more perhaps at the international level than that of the local artistic scene, Crugni is a master of the Socratic Arts transforming seemingly insignificant statuary blocks of marble into figures, concepts, ideas, motivation, sense and life.
In his Villapiana studio can be found, as if living, chisels, hammers, scrapers and brushes along with museum quality art including small marble sculptures, worked from the inside out , with faces, hands, symbols and shadowy illusions. You can feel the hard work in the air that pervades all his creations coupled with his unprecedented sublime creativity.
Already in 1979, the critic Antonino De Bono dedicated a flattering article to Crugni in the review ARTE più ARTE.
This book illustrates the works of Cesare Crugni and documents the acknowledgments of the European and international critics. It will be the means by which this honorable artist, who draws from his works the poetical sap for a new stirring aggression toward a pristine block of statuary marble, will become known to the entire world.
